Attachment Theory: Lessons for PhDers

It is mid-week, and I am doing it well. No harm or casualty, we are all happy. My difficult experience on Monday and Tuesday blogs are normal. I believe so because, this is a normal and healthy stage of development as infants form a strong attachment bond with their primary caregiver. Babies this young have a strong need for comfort, soothing, and the familiarity of their mother's presence.

Cultural kaleidoscope: a reflections on African community parenting style therapeutism

In contrast, parenting in the UK, where I currently reside, is more individualistic, with parents often shouldering the responsibility on their own. However, during this retreat, I had the pleasure of experiencing a glimpse of that communal parenting style again when we visited another couple. It was incredibly relaxing to get away to spend some time with another young couple, creating an environment where the child could play and interact with different individuals. The shared responsibility and support from both couples created a therapeutic atmosphere, allowing for moments of relaxation and relief, particularly for our wives.

How Retreats Rewire your Path to Achievement

I woke up and couldn’t sleep. All that occupied my mind was preparing a paper I had written for publication. This will be my first article published from my PhD, following numerous conferences. However, this time, perhaps due to yesterday’s writing retreat, I was fully committed to completing the task. I woke at 3am and continued until 7am, and by 7.30, the manuscript was ready. That’s the power of a retreat, particularly a writing retreat.

Power of Retreats

I remember last year's retreat in Dover. Dover is just at the bottom end of England, very close to France to the east. I had an amazing session—very, very impactful. I remember how inspired I was after the retreat, and I could say categorically that it helped me move faster. Before the next retreat, I'd completed my writings, my project, my thesis, everything. So I could say it made a significant impact. Yes, you might wonder why I had to go for this year's retreat. I went not because I needed to write, but simply because I also want to continue learning. I want to share the results and the outcome of the previous retreat with others so they know that the gathering is not a joke, that it's working. That's a way of giving back. That's a way to continue and progress. That is a way I embrace.

Hills of life: Lessons from a cycling adventure

The day started well. I had a couple of work emails to review, which I completed, and then I was preparing to go for a writing retreat in Canterbury. Just before I left, I needed to print off some documents, so I decided to cycle down to campus. But before I could get there, I needed to pass through a neighbouring town. So I took my bike and got ready. In fact, it was drizzling. So I got on the bike and went from Chatham through Rochester to Strood. It was quite easy actually, though stressful going up and down the hills. But upon arriving at Strood, just between Rochester and Strood, the hill was so steep. However, I had something in my mind. I told myself I was not going to put my feet on the ground. I would keep it slow and steady. When the hill was too steep, I kept it in the lowest gear.
